About airhome
airhome answers one question for someone about to buy or rent a home in Portugal: what is the air like at that address, compared with the rest of the country? Type an address and it shows the modelled air quality for the square kilometre around it, what the nearest monitoring stations have measured, the major roads and industrial sites nearby, and known projects that could change things.
It ranks places against each other. It does not say that anywhere is safe or unsafe, and it is not medical advice.
Where the data comes from
- Measured values: the European Environment Agency's Air Quality Download Service, which carries what Portugal's monitoring stations report. Station names and addresses come from APA's QualAr register.
- Modelled values: the EEA's 1 km European air quality maps, produced by the European Topic Centre on Human health and the Environment.
- Who lives where: WorldPop's 1 km population grid, which weights the headline rating.
- Industry: the EEA's European Industrial Emissions Portal.
- Roads and addresses: OpenStreetMap, and its Nominatim geocoder.
- Boundaries: CAOP 2024.1 from DGT.
All of it is open data, downloaded and processed ahead of time. Each dataset's licence, version and date checked is on sources and method.
